*Job Description
Role: The Manager – Work Equipment is responsible for ensuring the reliable operation and maintenance of the fleet of CN equipment used by Engineering personnel to maintain the line of road by stabilizing costs through standard practices and procedures, implementing system wide best practices, and communicating common strategy across the system and drive consistency in work equipment operations. Duties and Responsibilities: Critical performance areas include the following but may vary depending on location and circumstances:
Safety, compliance and enforcement focused
Manages the day-to-day operation of assigned shop or territory and responsible for leading assigned unionized staff to ensure maintenance and repair work on CN equipment is performed safely and efficiently
To provide a safe work environment based on consistent policies, procedures and training methodologies.
Provide the most reliable equipment fleet through consistent maintenance and repair processes.
Ensure equipment available to end user to meet program schedules and track maintenance requirements.
Stabilize overall operating costs for equipment repair and maintenance by implementing unit cost analysis by equipment type.
Builds, maintains and motivates an effective team
Monitor cost of labor, inventory and materials to ensure cost control and asset utilization are implemented
Understands and control each cost centers monthly and annual budgets
Working conditions:
Shift work which includes: Irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays
Combination of office and shop work and working outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.
Lift up to 50 lbs
May be relocated if necessary
Meet deadlines, interface with senior management
Travel for company business, at times without advance notice
Respond to unexpected or emergency situations
Minimum requirements:
Knowledge of mechanical engineered equipment-capacity, reliability, safety etc.
Knowledge and understanding of work equipment and the mechanics of them
Financial ability to assess both major and minor purchases but also be able to assess economics of leasing options
Ability to communicate effectively with all major stakeholders - Regional personnel, shop personnel, financial personnel, equipment suppliers etc.
Ability to translate customer needs into practical deliverables
High School Diploma or GED
3+ years experience in cost control and budget management
5+ years experience managing others
Ability to teach, train and coach others on a day to day basis in various regions
Must meet all medical fitness for duty requirements for the position
Preferences:
Relevant work experience in similar working conditions or regulatory/safety environment
Experience in managing budgets
Experience in supervising a unionized workforce
Labor relations experience i.e. interpretation of collective agreements, response to grievances, negotiations with union representatives, discipline, etc.
Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) qualified
Post-secondary education
Basic computer skills
