What you’ll be doing…

As an integral part of Student Services, you will be part of a team that provides the first line of contact and service-delivery for all students at Akerley Campus who are experiencing personal, social or academic difficulties. Focusing primarily on personal counseling, you will serve as a source of information relating to wellness, mental health, career development, and physical well-being. You will also refer students to other services and resources within the college or in the community, as appropriate. You will create resources and deliver and/or coordinate group sessions and workshops on a wide range of wellness and personal management topics, to aid students in adjusting to college life and becoming successful learners. In addition to providing brief, solution-focused counselling to students, you will provide leadership and support regarding critical incidents involving the entire campus community. You will foster the formation of campus-based groups to help students develop support networks. As part of the Student Services team, you will participate in, or at times leading, the organization of campus events, activities, or committees that contribute to the distinctive student experience, such as Orientation, Student Success Night, and the Campus Food Bank. This position reports to the Manager, Student Services under functional guidance of the Manager of Wellness and Counseling.

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • You have a Master’s degree in Education in Counselling; Masters Social Work; Masters Divinity, Pastoral Counselling; Masters Sociology/Humanities, Counselling or other credentials that have enabled you to be certified by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

  • You have a minimum of three years’ full-time experience, after receiving your Master Degree, counselling adults from diverse populations in areas such as mental illness, educational/academic advising, life-skills coaching or personal counselling.

Relevant Skills and Knowledge

  • You have proven skills providing services consistent with a brief, “solutions-focused” counselling model and facilitating group learning processes; in addition to experience in handling crises that may arise in our students’ lives or on campus.

  • Counselling experience within a post-secondary institution, as well as experience supervising counselling practicums would be assets.

  • The ability to understand and apply adult learning principles to student success interventions is necessary.

  • You are an excellent communicator, who possesses proven superb interpersonal, problem solving, and negotiating skills. You are able to build strong collaborative relationships with stakeholders on campus, such as faculty, staff, as well as students.

  • You also possess a proven ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, working in a team environment.
