Engineers (Civil and Environmental)- Town of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia

 

Town of Yarmouth, located in Southwestern Nova Scotia, is looking to hire two engineers (or engineers-in-training) for their municipality. Here is a brief summary of each one:

 

As a Civil Engineer, the major areas you will oversee include:

 

Infrastructure and asset management

- Preparation of tenders, estimates and design plans for major projects;

- Submitting applications for funding to various levels of government;

- Reviewing the design drawings and specs for projects;

- Sourcing and reviewing proposals for design services from consultants;

- Arranging for surveys and inspection of project sites;

- Managing all contract and project administration.

 

Traffic authority

- Conducting traffic studies;

- Reviewing requests for street closures, special events, parades, etc.

As an Environmental Engineer, the major areas you will oversee include:

Water and wastewater treatment

 

- Reporting to federal and provincial regulatory authorities as required;

- Providing oversight and support to the facility and staff;

- Overseeing implementation of the watershed protection strategy and management plan;

- Preparing recommendations to the water utility and the Town.

Solid waste and compost

 

- Reporting to federal and provincial regulatory authorities as required;

- Providing oversight and support to the Public Works Manager;

- Preparing recommendations to inform plans and priorities of the Town.

 

Contamination issues

- Managing any environmental issues that arise from time to time;

- Developing a brownfield remediation strategy and overseeing site remediation.

 

For both of these roles, you will provide support to the Town’s partners and agencies through shared services agreements. Your communication skills must be well developed as you will frequently prepare written and oral reports to Council, the CAO, Directors, and the public. You should also have knowledge of occupational health and safety standards, budgeting and business planning, quality management, and human resource management.
