Position profileOperations Port Manager – Eastern Passage CN's Multi-modal department operates a network of automotive facilities where vehicles are unloaded from and loaded to automotive railcars and overseas vessels. The safe, efficient and profitable operation of these terminals requires motivated personnel, careful planning, assignment of assets, continuing refinement of operating strategies, leveraging technology and best practices across terminals and ensuring metrics are achieved consistently to guarantee continued sustainable growth. The Eastern Passage Port Manager is responsible for the overall management of the day-to-day tactical facility operations including overall leadership of the team of Supervisors who are responsible for the unionized employees at the facility. The Port Manager also plays a key role in medium and long-term strategic planning to enable growth while maintaining a safe operation that provides unparalleled Service to CN's automotive customers at low incremental cost. In our dynamic, fast paced 24/7 environment, a high degree of flexibility and commitment is required to meet the demands of our Automotive customers. The position also requires excellent communication skills and knowledge about managing employees in an environment governed by a collective agreement Job Duties
Full responsibility and oversight of the 24/7 facility
Manage, direct, and provide insight and follow up to a team of supervisors and unionized team members.
Ensure compliance to safety rules, promote a safe work environment, and improve the overall safety record of the facility
Coach and develop supervisors to set expectations, lead, train and develop all team members through the management process.
Participate in customer meetings, Manage and ensure customer satisfaction and operational excellence.
Responsible for facility financials, budgeting and operational forecasts.
Accountable for asset utilization, maximizing efficiency
Accountable for the development, approval, and periodic review of operating procedures for all the operational activities.
Participate in damage prevention process.
Respond to grievances, and recommend disciplinary measures for unionized staffing.
Must be able to manage an extensive work force and develop timely solutions to operating problems.
Participate in negotiating collective bargaining agreements.
Approve invoices for all Terminal purchases
Communicate effectively with other facility managers, senior managers, customers and vendors
Available; on call 24/7 for any issues and emergencies.
Skills/Functional Knowledge
Strong Leadership skills including consistently providing clear, balanced feedback that drives future performance of the terminal
Team work mentality, with strong active listening and communication skills
Extended network of contacts across various functions including Operations, Finance, Sales and Mktg.
Good computer skills; especially Microsoft Office (Excel, Word), SRS, ATS
Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, and change management.
Knowledge of risk assessment (including cost/benefit analysis)
Quantitative analysis experience
Engaged in understanding CNs goals, and Marketing vision
Tactical knowledge of the operation and ability and willingness to perform hands-on tasks, “boots on the ground”• Open minded, committed and driven individual with a positive attitude to shape our future rather than manage the present status
Conceptual thinker, ability to see things from the perspective of various stakeholders
Education / Certification / Experience
Valid driver's license with a clean record
Past experience with working in union environment
Degree in business or logistics preferred
Railroad operations 3-5 years
