English Second Language Teacher

Reporting to the Francophone Information Services Facilitator, based out of the Shearwater Site, the English Second Language Teacher is responsible for: evaluating student language skills, developing and implementing lesson plans consistent with the second language training curriculum, administering both formative and summative tests to all students, preparing and submitting a course report identifying what was completed, issues and recommendation for improved program delivery.

Responsibilities (include but are not limited to)

  • Create a welcoming, safe, non-judgmental, nurturing environment for all training provided;

  • Development and implementation of lesson plans consistent with the second language training curriculum;

  • Administration of both formative and summative tests to all students; and

  • Preparation and submission of a course report identifying what was completed, issues which need to be addressed for future courses and recommendations for improved delivery of second language training.

  • Evaluation of student language skills at the beginning and end of each session of language training.

  • Believe in and practice the mission and goals of the Halifax & Region MFRC;

  • Ability to work as a positive member the team, facilitating a team environment;

  • Participate in development of new ideas and methods for program enhancement;

  • Maintain a constant awareness of the “client” and exhibit recognition and appreciation of their needs with the ability to achieve results with positive outcomes;

  • Ability to be energetic, resilient and maintain a sense of humour when personal resources are challenged;

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;

  • Ability to meet deadlines in a timely and efficient manner;

  • High degree of personal initiative, strong planning, organizational and administrative skills;

  • Ability to multitask, be adaptable and flexible; and

  • Ability to motivate, persuade and inspire people.


  • Possess accreditation from a recognized University to teach English as a second language (TESL) or Bachelor degree/Bachelor of Education with demonstrated experience in teaching second languages;

  • Ability to read, write and speak French would be considered an asset;

  • Experience in group/workshop facilitation with adults;

  • Excellent interpersonal and assessment skills;

  • Knowledge of the unique challenges of the military family lifestyle considered an asset; and

  • Must pass screening process of the Child Abuse Registry and a Criminal Records check

Casual Employment: Annual contract based on Community Need, contract reflects three 60 hour sessions.

Salary: $25.00/hr plus 4% vacation pay
