Summer Day Camp Counsellor

Camp counsellors will supervise children ages 5-12 years while implementing fun, creative programs including sports, games, drama, crafts, and special events.  The successful candidates will work well in a team environment and have excellent communication, both written and verbal.  In addition, counsellors will possess strong leadership and customer service skills and have the ability to plan and implement programs. Must be able to work well under pressure, independently and be an effective and creative problem solver.

Responsibilities (include but are not limited to)

  • Create a welcoming, safe, non-judgmental, nurturing environment for the summer camp program;

  • Liaise with parents on a daily basis, or as required, to discuss daily activities, concerns, policies or other pertinent matters;

  • Establish and maintain effective communication with children, parents, and staff;

  • Assist in the planning, development, and facilitating of quality programming.

  • Responsible for the safety and well-being of the children and youth in attendance

  • Actively facilitate programs and supervise children

  • Responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the learning environment and the equipment

  • Responsible for Centre opening and/or closing duties as scheduled

  • Practice appropriate behaviour management techniques.

  • Follow program plans and schedules in a timely manner

  • Maintain accurate records: i.e. sign-in and out forms, attendance, accident and incident forms, and programming

  • Promote positive attitudes and foster self-esteem in children

  • Be a positive role model for participants and staff

  • Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize and follow through on tasks

  • Oversee the occurrence of special events and field trips

  • Ensure camp and activities are safe and policies are adhered too

  • Oversee to the day-to-day programming and scheduling

  • Assist in providing support to program staff and volunteers

  • Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize and follow through on tasks

  • Complete reports and various administrative responsibilities when required

  • Ensure all safety and risk management practices are adhered to according to OH&S Program

 

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children

  • University Student or High School completion (Grade 11 Students accepted)

  • Must be a returning student September 2016

  • Possess the ability to work as part of a team and with volunteers.

  • Current First-aid and CPR certification.

  • Knowledge of the unique challenges of the Military Family Lifestyle and proficiency in French are considered an asset.

 

Term Date: 23 June – 26 August, 2016

Salary: $10.70 – $10.75 per hour plus 4% vacation pay

Number of Positions:  4  (Halifax and/or Shearwater)
