Career Counsellor and Career Development Practitioners

Opportunity Place delivers comprehensive employment services for individuals and employers in the Bedford/Sackville and area. We provide one-on-one coaching, workshop facilitation, employment assessments, case management, job development, employer engagement and employment maintenance services. To support our clients, we are hiring a Career Counsellor and Career Development Practitioners. Working cohesively within a team of employment services professionals, the successful candidates will be responsible for the delivery of both in-house and outreach services to our clients. The ideal candidates will be highly dynamic, organized and detail oriented, with outstanding people skills, highly adaptable and have a passion for helping clients to successfully achieve their career goals.

Counsellor and Career Development Practitioners Skills and Competencies:

Career Development • Working knowledge of career development theory and applications • Ability to define and manage career and personal development goals and transition • Adherence to inclusionary practice, ethical decision making, and respect for diversity • Solid understanding of assessment processes, tools and resources • Working knowledge of employment/career related services, programs and interventions • Commitment to professional development and career self-management Facilitation • Ability to design, organize and implement group sessions with diverse client groups • As part of the Employment Services team, design, organize and facilitate group sessions with diverse client groups on a broad range of topics • Good understanding of Adult Learning Principles/ Understanding of program evaluation concepts General • Commitment to inclusionary practice, ethical decision making and respect for diversity. • Ability to secure a clear Vulnerable Sector Check and/or Criminal Record Check • Functional ability to speak French considered an asset

Career Counsellor Responsibilities: Provide individuals who have been assessed as having multiple, complex employment barriers with an in depth evaluation of their career development options. Provide expert counselling skills which include a clinical or functional understanding of the psychological and emotional impact of employment barriers. The objective is to address the challenges that have been identified and to ready the client to participate fully in sustainable employment.

Career Counsellor Skills and Competencies:

Counselling • Certification with professional counselling associations; specialized counselling competencies • Incorporate therapeutic awareness and skills in client relationships • Ability to administer and interpret psychometric assessments

Career Counsellor Education, Training, Certification and Experience: • Graduate level education with a counselling focus (e.g. Masters of Counselling, Social Work, or Psychology) and experience in career development preferred • Completion of a supervised counselling practicum or internship preferred • Must have and maintain required certification with a professional counselling association, (or be eligible for membership) • 2 years related experience in the field of career development would be an asset. • Experience delivering services and support in a client-centred work environment Career Development Practitioner Responsibilities: Conduct client needs assessment; identify barriers to employment; develop plan to address barriers; monitor and evaluate plan; adjust as needed; provide group facilitation services; follow-up and support.

Career Development Practitioner Skills & Competencies: General • Good knowledge of community organizations, service providers, and referral agencies • Ability to access and effectively use information and communications technology; conduct research • Solid understanding of Labour Market Information and its applications • The ability to define and manage career and personal development goals and transition • Solid understanding of assessment, processes, tools and resources • Working knowledge of the service infrastructure dedicated to service persons with employment support needs

Career Development Practitioner Education, Training, Certification and Experience: • Preference will be given to individuals with a bachelor's degree/post-secondary education in Sociology, Psychology, Education, Human Services or Human Resources, or equivalent education and work experience • Several years of relevant experience in services related to career development or in a human services profession required • Experience dealing with employment issues and an understanding of the issues related to employment disadvantages/barriers • Certified Career Development Practitioner designation, in the process of obtaining certification or meets the required criteria to work toward future certification with The Nova Scotia Career Development Association required
